BGS have detected an earthquake at 02:34 UTC (03:34 BST)
this morning (1 April 2011) located approximately 4 km northeast of
Blackpool, Lancashire. Several residents from Blackpool, Preston and
surrounding areas have reported having felt this event, describing “some
neighbours houses are showing lights as if they were woken up”
and “heard a bang then felt a rumble”
This is the largest earthquake detected in this area since a
magnitude 2.5 ML near Blackpool in 1970. The magnitude 3.7 Ulverston
earthquake on 28 April 2009 was also felt in Lancashire. Historically,
the largest earthquake in the region was a magnitude 4.4 earthquake near
Lancaster in 1835 with a maximum intensity of 6 EMS.
